Food Experience Underway

The food served on board a Coast Guard cutter I went underway on was surprisingly good! Of course there was the occasional "so-so" meal, but the food experience definitely exceeded my expectations. Unfortunately, I didn't get to take pictures of everything I thought was good. But, I did snatch of a few pics of the pizza night we had. The pastry shown is a beignet. The solo pizza picture was an attempt at using leftover pork adobo to make pork adobo pizza (I called it a Filipino pizza). Also, we fished around the Pacific a few times and for the first time, I caught an edible fish! It was a wahoo fish. Hopefully someone emails me with a picture of myself with the fish.
I wish I had taken a photo of the furikake panko fried wahoo that was caught the day it was served. That was probably my favorite prepared dinner on the boat. Eating clean and healthy at all times was an unsuccessful task. Perhaps why I had looked forward to and appreciated what was served, was because it was not me having to prepare, cook and clean the meals. Other meals that I enjoyed included: top sirloin steak night with baked potatoes, Chicken katsu, Chinese (well...American Chinese) Orange chicken and lumpia, Kalbi short ribs, chili and rice, Kalua pork with lomi lomi..to name a few. I was at least able to have my egg white omelet every morning since eggs were made to order. However, I did eventually miss my own kitchen. The biggest thing I missed: GOOD COFFEE. Yes, the coffee beans were freshly ground, but the beans tasted like they were boiled in dirt water prior to being sent to the boat. Other foods I missed: oatmeal, cottage cheese, natural peanut butter (I don't consume peanut butter prepared with hydrogenated oils)....being able to prepare clean meals that wasn't heavily fried or prepared with butter and other fats.

Upon my grateful return home, my family and I indulged in our homemade pan pizza with pepperoni and Coke Zero (the only time I drink soda is with pizza and burgers). Anyways, I've typed enough for one post. I still have Easter vittle fun to share next time. Cheers to good food and family.
