With the commissary being closed these days under the government shut down, I ended up getting two weeks worth of grocery shopping done. Miraculously, I did not break the bank shopping there. It did require some serious discipline. I guess I applied two rules to shopping there: 1) I more or less stuck with what I needed on my grocery list, although, I did have to improvise some of it because my list was originally meant for the commissary. 2) I avoided buying tempting, but unnecessary items such as chocolate Cheerios - I did not want my family being bored of having to eat two large bags of chocolate Cheerios for 6 months.
What I do value at Costco, are there meats. The quality and price per pound, is quite competitive with the commissary. I definitely didn't mind having to buy two 2.5 pound top round roasts because I knew I could have a roast one week and maybe a few weeks later, do something with the other. I tend to buy my frozen chicken there as well. And to throw in something different, bought there bulk pack of non-frozen chicken thighs. Lately, I've been getting tired of the blandness of chicken breasts. Chicken still on the bone is much more flavorful.
I also am a fan of their produce. I did have to put the wallet brakes on a few items. I do LOVE pomegranates, but I just couldn't bring myself to buy 6-7 giant sized pomegranates for 13.99. I mean, the price really isn't that bad for the amount of seeds you end up with. I just did not want to see them going to waste in my fridge. Enough grocery list talking. I love Costco and that is that.
In future posts, I'll probably share more items I love from there and give you all a review. And for those of you who have memberships to other places like BJ's and Sam's Club..I hope I can convert you!
