If you want to get a car safety inspection AND enjoy some local Hawaiian grub, go to Wally Ho's Garage and Grille in Aeia, HI. The outside may not look like much, but the food is certainly worthwhile. Everything is made from scratch on the spot. They also sell their freshly baked goods such as lilikoi bread, lemon bars and banana bread.
My recent visit here was the result of unfortunate events preceding this lucky find. Here's the story: I drove to work as I normally do, enjoying the 30 minute drive and listening to songs on the radio. I arrive at the military installation I work at. Of course, there's the usual gate I have to pass to enter. Well, on this particular occasion, the gate guard must have been bored. He asked to see my car registration. Unbeknownst to me, my car registration expired about 2 weeks ago.........
I then was instructed to turn my car around and exit the gate and park on the outside dirt parking lot. Fortunately, another coworker who arrived at the gate before me also shared the same predicament. The two of us ended up hitching a ride with another coworker who's registration was NOT expired. Then the gate guard tells us that we "technically" aren't allowed to park outside the gate and they we take the risk of getting ticketed. To both our luck, our cars were not ticketed by the time our shift was over.
Immediately after work, I paid the hefty $300 registration fine for having an expired registration (reason #101 not to live in Hawaii....I've NEVER had to pay such a fine in any other state for having an expired registration). The silver lining to this payment, is that I can get refunded since I'm active duty military (yay!). I just have to go through the hassle of finding that form to prove I'm stationed here. But then again, why can't official military orders suffice!??? I mean seriously, I swear Hawaii likes to complicate things to avoid giving military members refunds.
The trip to the DMV was less than 10 minutes. I figured that I might as well get my car safety inspection done. Wally Ho's was on my route back home. The inspection was speedy and the food was delicious. I ordered lunch to-go for both my husband and I. He had the garlic chicken plate (which he said was really good), and I had their chicken salad sandwich which was tasty.
And that's the story to how I found Wally Ho's Garage and Grill. I highly recommend you try this place next time you need an annual safety car inspection (again, what other state makes you do this???)
Cheers to new lunch finds!
